A once-lost Renaissance painting by Ludovico Mazzolino has been found after being left forgotten in a packing case for nearly 60 years.

Experts from the National Gallery in London identified the painting as the work of the master who studied under some of the greatest painters of the era, including Dosso Dossi.

The painting by the artist, who was also known as Mazzolino da Ferrara, depicts the Madonna and Child with St Joseph in an Italian-style landscape and is dated back to 1522.

Next month it is set to go under the hammer at auction, almost 200 years since it was last sold.
