6,500-year-old tooth filling found in Slovenia

A tooth found in a cave in Slovenia is the oldest evidence of dentistry yet found.

Italian researchers believe they have discovered the oldest dental filling — a beeswax cap applied to a left canine tooth about 6,500 years ago.

The filling was discovered by chance as Claudio Tuniz, Federico Bernardini and colleagues at the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste used a fossilized jaw bone to test new X-ray imaging equipment.

Found early last century embedded on the wall of a karstic cave near the village of Lonche, in what is now Slovenia, the bone most likely belonged a 24–30-year-old individual.

Question of the Moment
Government eavesdropping on private citizens has been happening for centuries. Is the current episode a violation of the fourth amendment of the Constitution which guards against unreasonable search?
- No. The government is not doing anything unreasonable.
- Yes. It is unreasonable and the surveillance should be stopped at once. The Constitution says "We the People." It does not say, "We the Government."
- Yes. It is unreasonable but we have to understand that the threat to public safety requires action.
- The question is academic. The unauthorized surveillance is pretty much ineffective anyway (e.g. the Boston Marathon bombing)
- If the framers of the Constitution could see the 21st century, they would understand that new technology requires action not imagined in the 18th century.
